Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a Mexican holiday celebrated from November 1st - November 2nd.
The ritual of the festival includes offerings on a decorated altar for deceased relatives, and ancestors. Anything of value can be offered, although there are traditional items designated for the altar and the pleasure of the deceased; A reunion, and a celebration.
Some of these include: Marigolds, candles, incense, some type of traditional food item, tequila, and photos of the deceased.
As beautiful as it is that America is facilitating the blending of cultures like never before, there is truth in the fact that second generational children are being born in the United States, and the teachings from their parents and their traditional customs are becoming lost. I believe it to be of utmost importance for us to continue on, and keep our cultures rich and prominent - whatever they may be.
